Living in Izmir has all the benefit of it's location the Aegean Sea: Mediterranean climate, warm weather, and plenty of outdoor recreation. But it also has it's hazards as well. Turkey is located on many numerous fault lines which means Izmir experiences numerous earthquakes year round. While the vast majority of earthquakes in this region are minor and cause little more than a momentary pause for most people, sometimes they can be intense, if not deadly. The ~7.0 magnitude earthquake and subsequent mini-tsunami on October 30, 2020 that toppled buildings in Izmir and killed dozens of people is a reminder that disaster can strike unannounced at any time.
