Deputy Chief of Staff Plans

Brigadier General José María Martínez Ferrer

Brigadier General Jose Maria Martinez Ferrer, Spanish Army, earned his commission as a second lieutenant of artillery from the Spanish Military Academy in 1989. He assumed duties with NATO Allied Land Command in July 2020.

During the first four years of his career, BG Martinez Ferrer was assigned to the Spanish Army Air Defense Regiment nº 71 as a platoon leader and battery commander in Madrid. From 1993 to 1996, he served in the Airmobile Brigade’s Field Artillery Battalion in Pontevedra as a battery Commander and completed one deployment for United Nations UNPROFOR as AG-3 of the Spanish Task Force HQ in Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Upon promotion to Major and graduation from the Spanish General Staff School, he was assigned to the Spanish Army Air Defense Regiment nº 74 (HAWK) in Cadiz from 1996 to 2001: during this time he deployed again to the Balkans as part of NATO’s Stabilization Force (SFOR) at the Allied Military Intelligence Battalion (AMIB).

From 2002 to 2006, BG Martinez served in the Spanish Air Defense Brigade Headquarters as the G3/G-7 OPS Section Branch Head. In this time he was the Spanish Army Representative in NATO’s TACEVAL Program.

In 2006 he was selected to attend to Command and General Staff course (ACSC) at the Defence Academy (Shrivenham) in the United Kingdom, and was appointed in 2007 to the Spanish Joint College of Higher Studies (CESEDEN) as Directing Staff in the Operations Department until 2010.

As Lieutenant Colonel, BG Martinez then served as the Air Defense Brigade Chief of Staff from 2010 to 2013 in Madrid. He next served in the Joint Operations Command HQ (MOPS) as Deputy Chief Section J5 PLANS until 2016, having a tour of duty at the Comprehensive Crisis and Operations Management Centre (CCOMC), at SHAPE in Mons, Belgium. After the promotion to Colonel, he was assigned to be the Commandant of the Spanish Army Artillery School in Segovia until 2019.

In 2020 he served as Directing Staff in the Spanish Army War College until June of that year, when he was promoted to Brigadier General and assigned to LANDCOM as Plans Directorate Chief.
