Deputy Chief of Staff Operations
Having finished the Military College in Hungary, Brigadier General Janos SOMOGYI was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant in 1988 and became a battery commander in a field artillery brigade. He served as sound ranging, arty recce, and field arty battery commander, later as a battalion XO, then deputy battalion commander. From 1998 to 2000 he attended the National Defence University in Hungary and gained a Master degree in Operational Art and Military Leadership.
Following the university studies, he became a BM-21 battalion commander. In 2001 he attended English Language course in Canada. After his Battalion Commander time in 2004-2007 he assumed a position in the Allied Rapid Reaction Corps (ARRC) in Germany. He worked for the ARRC, Joint Effect Branch, Fire Coordination Section as a Joint Fires Ops/Plans staff officer.
Following the NATO assignment he worked for HUN Joint Force Command, as the deputy J3 Branch Chief, then deputy G37 Branch Chief. In 2013 he was posted to the 5th Infantry Brigade as the COS. In 2014 he was selected to attend the US Army War College (AWC) where he gained diploma and master degree as well. (Master of Strategic Studies) After his graduation from AWC in 2015 he was posted back to the 5th Infantry Brigade as COS. Since 01 July 2016 he has been serving as DCOS OPS at LANDCOM HQ.
He was deployed three times to Afghanistan. In 2006-2007 he worked for ISAF HQ CJOC as joint fires ops staff officer. In 2010-2011 he was deployed to Afghanistan again and worked for RC North CJ3 as chief plans. In 2012 he had a mission in Afghanistan again, as the Commander of the Provincial Reconstruction Team in Baghlan province.
BG Somogyi attended several NATO and other national and international courses likewise : Battalion Commander Carrier Course (Hungary) , International Liaison Course (Israel), NATO Staff Officer Course (Ogau) NATO Conventional Targeting Course (Ogau), NATO INFOOPS Course (Ogau), NATO BI-SEC Course (Ogau), NATO System of System Analysis Course (Budapest), Joint Firepower Course (Ramstein), NATO ISAF Individual Assignment Preparation Course (Ogau), NATO RC NORTH Preparation Course (Dresden), NATO COPD Course Sweden (Stockholm), and Combat Readiness Evaluation (CREVAL) Course for Land Forces (Ogau).
In 2016 he was promoted to BG. He has 8 national and 4 international decorations. He speaks at advanced proficiency English, and intermediate Russian.
