Stephen A. Rice
Born in Toronto,
Ontario, Canada, Chief Warrant Officer (CWO-OR9) Stephen A. Rice enrolled in
the Canadian Armed Forces as a Field Artilleryman in 1987.
Throughout his career,
CWO Rice served at all rank levels from Gunner to CWO in Artillery Regiments,
filling numerous leadership appointments in all aspects of the artillery be it
on the Gun Line, or in Command Posts or Forward Observation Parties. Out of
trade appointments include; Training Standards Warrant Officer in the
Divisional Training Centre, Artillery Observer Controller Trainer and Company
Sergeant Major of the Contemporary Operating Environmental Force or "COEFOR” in
Wainwright, Alberta at the National Canadian Maneuver Training Center. CWO Rice
has also served as the Headquarters Sergeant Major, at the Canadian Defence
Academy Headquarters in Kingston, Ontario.
CWO Rice has
completed several operational deployments including OP SNOWGOOSE in Cyprus as a
Section Commander in 1992, and two OP PALLADIUM tours in Bosnia. In 1997 / Roto
1 as a Forward Observation Officers Technician, and in 2000 / Roto 6 as an
Infantry Section Commander with the 3rd Battalion Princess Patricia’s Canadian
Light Infantry. His most recent deployment was to Afghanistan on Task Force
1-08 OP ATHENA as Battery Sergeant-Major. CWO Rice has also deployed on
numerous domestic operations including, Avalanche Control in Rogers Pass,
British Columbia in 1988; the Manitoba floods in 1997 and 2014; and the G8
Summit in Kananaskis, Alberta in 2002.
Rice has completed all trade and leadership courses up to his current rank
Basic Parachutist and Rappel Master, his military education includes the
Assistant Instructor- in- Gunnery Course, Combat Leaders Course, Senior Leaders
Course, Chief Qualification Course, and the Senior Appointment Programme.
In May 2013, CWO Rice was
appointed Regimental Sergeant Major of the 1st Regiment, Royal Canadian Horse
Artillery, Shilo, Manitoba. Throughout
his time as RSM his unit deployed in two domestic operations; lead unit for the
Manitoba floods in 2014 where he was awarded a Chief of Defence Staff
Commendation for leadership, and a supporting role in the Saskatchewan fires in
was also appointed as a Member of the Order of Military Merit in 2016.
CWO Rice assumed the duties of Senior Enlisted
Leader or Command Sergeant Major in NATO’s Allied Land Command Headquarters in
Izmir, Turkey in August 2016.
